Why study English?
The study of English allows you to explore the ideas and language of some of the best writers in the classic and modern literary canon. The course is designed to foster deep thought about your views, the worlds and ideas of the studied texts and the interplay between each.
What will I study?
The course will lead to two separate GCSEs: one in English Language (AQA 8700) and one in English Literature (AQA 8702).
English Language will involve exploring and producing non-fiction; understanding and analysing prose fiction; and writing creatively.You will study texts from a variety of genres and eras.
English Literature will involve the study of AQA’s Power and Conflict poetry anthology, ‘An Inspector Calls’, ‘A Christmas Carol’ and ‘Macbeth’. Responses to unseen poetry is also a critical component.
How will I study?
English is studied through a variety of whole class, group and individual tasks. This includes regular discussion and debate, active play readings and poetry performances, as well as exploring non-fiction and creative writing tasks.
How will my work be assessed?
Achievement in English Language and Literature will be graded from 1-9, with 9 being the highest level.
Spoken Language will be awarded Pass, Merit or Distinction.
English Language
100% final exam, without tiers; there is no coursework or controlled assessment.
Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing (1:45 hrs)
Paper 2: Writers’ Viewpoints and Perspectives (1:45 hrs)
Spoken Language (formerly Speaking and Listening) will be assessed and reported separately and given a 0% weighting.
English Literature
100% final exam, without tiers; closed book; there is no coursework or controlled assessment.
Paper 1: Shakespeare and the 19th century novel (1:45 hrs)
Paper 2: Modern texts and poetry (2:15 hrs)
