Last term, Lydia, Year 11 & Young Carer, met Ed Davey, MP, at an event organised by Be Free Young Carers. Over to Lydia with an account of the meeting:
"On Friday, 15th November, I had the incredible opportunity, as well as a group of young carers from across Oxfordshire, to meet with Ed Davey, Leader of the Liberal Democrats. The event, organised by Be Free Young Carers, provided a platform for young people to share their experiences and discuss the support they receive in schools.
"During the meeting, young carers from different schools gathered to talk about what life is like balancing their caring responsibilities with their education. It was a chance to raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by young carers and to discuss ways schools can offer support. Students had the chance to contribute ideas on improving the representation of young carers in schools, ensuring that their needs are understood and addressed. It was inspiring to hear the diverse perspectives of other young carers and work together to make sure that the voices of young people in this important role are heard.
"This event was an invaluable experience, allowing students to connect with others in similar situations, express their thoughts, and engage with key decision-makers like Ed Davey. The discussion was not only insightful but also empowering, showing that young carers can have a real impact in shaping the future of education and support."
A big thank you to Lydia for representing and supporting her young carer group at Wallingford School.
