There is something amazing about watching a person transform on stage and start to perform. It is particularly special when it is a young person. For most teachers we see our students in school each and every day experiencing their school lives – in a lesson, in a queue, at the school gate, on the bus. We have every day interactions with them as “normal people”.
Some teachers have the privilege each day of seeing how students can perform – that they can sing and dance, act and play an instrument. Most of us don’t see these things very often but then we do and they knock us off our feet.
On a drizzly November Friday morning last week I popped in to the school hall to see the trailer for our upcoming school show “Our House”. It wasn’t a dress rehearsal – the students were in a mix of uniform and PE kit – and it wasn’t properly lit or made-up but it was just brilliant. The energy, enthusiasm and talent on display were simply fantastic. What is wonderful is that students who I know a little bit from a daily greeting or seeing them in a lesson are suddenly transformed in to performers and they relish the moment, confident and composed as they command the stage. It is a joy to behold.
The production of “Our House” takes place next week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Tickets are still available and I cannot recommend it highly enough – I am certainly looking forward to it!
