A number of Year 8 and 9 girls attended the “See What You Can Be” programme at RAF Benson. The programme involved inspirational women talking to girls from ten schools about the jobs that they do, with an aim to inspire female students into understanding they can be whatever they want to be, if they set their minds to it.

The day started with an incredibly inspiring talk by Vanessa, AKA “The Girl On A Bike”. She talked about her journey, success, and how she faced incredible adversity to get to where she is now.  A great start to the day.

The remainder of the day was filled with a circus of talks to our students, ranging from the following job roles.

  • Astronauts
  • RAF and London MET firearms Police
  • Fire Service
  • International Rugby Players
  • Designers from Maclaren sports cars
  • Midwives
  • Helicopter pilots
  • MET office workers
  • 4x4 Adventure drivers
  • A lady who has been trekking Everest

All of the women that hosted our students talked passionately about their jobs and how they are often in the minority in terms of gender within their line of work.

Our students loved the day and left feeling inspired that they could be what they wanted to be. I’m sure the free Slushie helped too!

Mr Lyons (Services Champion) and Mr Choi (Head of Year 8) would like to thank Carla and her team from the base as well as all the students for their impeccable behaviour and input.
